Pietermaritzburg Airport is on track for a substantial transformation as part of Msunduzi Municipality’s revised Airport Master Plan, aimed at improving connectivity, boosting tourism, and attracting business investment.

The airport has long struggled with flight delays and diversions to King Shaka International Airport in Durban, largely due to its limited landing capabilities and the absence of approved instrument flight procedures. These limitations were highlighted in a recent Travel News report.
Nelisiwe Ngcobo, Acting Municipal Manager of Msunduzi Municipality, said the plan aligns with the city’s broader economic development vision.
“Presently, the airport handles four scheduled arrivals and departures daily, alongside charter and training flights from two flight schools. Demand is steadily increasing, validating the airport’s expansion strategy,” said Ngcobo.
According to the municipality’s findings, there is growing demand for direct flights to Cape Town and Gqeberha, with increasing inbound interest linked to the airport’s proximity to the Midlands Meander and the Drakensberg region.
To encourage airline interest, the city is offering incentives such as reduced landing fees and marketing support.

A phased approach to growth
The new Airport Master Plan outlines a strategic, phased rollout from 2026 through to 2035, with both infrastructure upgrades and commercial development on the table.
Short- to medium-term goals (2026–2028):
- Attracting a second airline to diversify routes and reduce travel costs.
- Upgrades to the terminal, including expanded retail and office space, improved baggage handling systems, and digital check-in services.
- Development of surrounding land to include a hotel, conference centre, and retail hub – part of a broader aerotropolis vision.
- Expansion of the aircraft apron to accommodate increased traffic.
Long-term vision (2030–2035):
- Extending the runway to support larger aircraft and low-cost carriers.
- Separating general aviation from commercial operations to streamline efficiency.
- Constructing a dedicated cargo terminal.
If implemented as planned, the upgrades could mark a new chapter for Pietermaritzburg Airport, positioning it as a more accessible and economically viable gateway to KwaZulu-Natal’s interior.
